MDCon, WMD.Pro and Ko-Fi

MDCon is announcing the direction that Ko-Fi Donations will take.

WMD.Pro is a 3 Letter domain. This in itself is costly. Coupled with the '.pro' Top Level Domain (TLD), the price becomes daunting. After almost a day of searching, the best offer price for the domain was found with Cloudflare at just under $500 per year.

Why is it important to have such a domain name when it only points to a fork of the Web MiniDisc Pro project in the public domain?

Anyone can create their own fork, take it any direction they wish, publish the link or register a domain name for it and give the public access. There are no restrictions on this. http://web.minidisc.wiki is, by just my estimation, the most frequently used fork. And, by my estimation the one receiving the most active development. There is no way I can know how many forks are available and track them, their features, development cycle and frequency of updates. I do not even know if this is a worthwhile undertaking to attempt to collect this information.

I am aware of others in the community adding their own features on locally installed Electron installations. Often, after a new feature is developed, the creator reaches out to the dev team maintaining the fork maintained at  http://web.minidisc.wiki so that the feature can be investigated and added into the fork. The dev team is very open to incorporation of other's efforts and ideas.

Web MiniDisc Pro is a direct fork of the original Web MiniDisc was started as per the request of its original developer - Stefano Brilli.

It was always meant to be the more "feature-packed" version of the application.

The core differences between Web MiniDisc and the Pro fork are:

  • Changes to core technology required to build it
  • Multiple changes to the UI As well as the inclusions of various features, such as:
    • netmd-exploits (among others audio tracks download, .AEA upload)
    • HiMD support
    • Support for multiple encoder backends
